What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a wonderfully relaxing massage therapy which comes from
Japan. It's based on the same principles of oriental medicine which
underpin acupuncture. The underlying philosophy is that vital energy,
known as 'ki' or 'chi', flows throughout the body in a series of
channels or 'meridians'. Sometimes the smooth flow of ki can be
disturbed, creating an imbalance which manifests itself as a symptom. |

Children Shiatsu
Shiatsu massage is helpful for children who suffer from headaches,
asthma, eczema, repeated ear infections, difficulty in concentrating
and many other problems. The workshops are full of play and show
how children know innately what massages they need and how to apply
them. |

Adult Shiatsu
Sessions last about an hour and take place on a padded mat at floor
level. Unlike most forms of massage, Shiatsu is done through clothing
so you don’t have to undress. Depending on your symptoms and
general energy levels, a variety of techniques will be used to improve
the flow of energy in the body, from stretches and rotations to
pressure from the thumbs, hands, fingers, elbows, knees and feet.
What are the benefits?
The benefits can help in a wide range of conditions, from specific
injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. In general terms
Shiatsu eases tension and stiffness, improves breathing, posture,
circulation and enhances wellbeing. Regular treatments are a great
way to de-stress and can help you become more aware of your health
and how it's affected by your lifestyle and mood.
Guidelines for treatment
It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably
cotton– jogging bottoms, t-shirt and socks are ideal. Avoid
eating heavily 2 hours beforehand, and after the session drink plenty
of water, avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise. |
